Managing you, by Managing your Debate....

Managing you, by Managing your Debate…..

While watching BBC, last night; It just struck to my mind as "Why do We Debate" ?
And a deep thought process started…..

I believe, we debate not only to prove ourselves always right, but to get an constructive outcome too -  which is accepted by the other party (or society). A debate is actually about, how well you present what you believe or what logics you can offer to stand your belief.

Great Nelson Mandela once said “Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument…”

The debacle of debate is that in the present political forum, the debate becomes either personal attacks or News channel’s baby.

But in general, we debate to provide many opinions and work to provide reasoning so that society can function, or a logical discussion could make a point, whether political or social. We debate for fun, for learning, to work, and to satisfy a means for diplomatic solution. Debate is the foundation of humanity & for an open society, so that we can decide and present the best possible solution or option and move up with the best. There is always an objective or purpose for a debate, and the purpose can be satisfied through debate.

From the very beginning, the debate had been an integral concept of Open society.

In the Ancient Bharat (India), the Great ‘Brahmins’ (the Priests) were involved in ‘Tark – Vitark’ (Debates). The debate could be for winning something or to put your point of view before the king & the kingdom. It had the Objective or the Challenge, the Challenge period, the Opinion (debate) & the debate period. Ending either with convincing each other, the Opinion panel or by Voting of the jury panel. In Hindus the ‘debates’ were the part of society & mainly ‘Brahmins’ were involved in ‘Pratisphardha’ (Competitions) & ‘tark-vitark’ (Debates), by means of Vedic Poems, Answering the knowledge queries or by ‘mantrochaar’ (Chanting of Sanskrit Slokas). It was always a positive argument, as there was no winner – looser concept.

Even today, the real debate carries these 4 important attributes – Challenge or Discussion point, Challenge Period, Opinions, Debate Period & the Judgment or Votes.

In early Greece too, there were a set of people called 'Sophist', those made their living out of debates, they used to argue for the sake of arguing, and amongst them, the most highly paid were those who could convince the audience as they were right; even if the audience were known to believe the opposite views.

The process of debate provides long lasting & deep benefits to Societies, Global Forums, Communities or Individuals. Debate helps society or individual thru Deep Analysis, Logical Thinking, Team Work, Forum Based Actions & Researches.  Debate help society to understand their Social or Political leaders & their capabilities – so society grow better. Rather we learn debate from our school days itself. And a good debater (speaker) knows as how to put his point of view, & with what logic, and When? So it not only teaches logical argument, but time management too. And upon winning, it boosts the Self Confidence of the team or the individual. Debate, too, helps us to find the root cause of problem & then to devise a structural plan or logical ideas to go ahead.

Mahatma Gandhi Said ~ “Honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress”.

In Debate, we agree to disagree – plan & come back. Its helps us to understand & respect other’s point of view & teaches us principles of acceptance & patience. Rather some earlier taken major decisions can be either altered or changed, based on debate or costiveness of fresh opinions. We learn to come up with alternative ways or dialogues on various / different situations & to put our Challenge in very constructive manner.

So, In a debate or argument; it is suggested to be positive & tolerant, as it’s a debate & not a war.
A debate must be started by  :

-          Introduction or Acceptance of Topic or The Challenge

      -          Understanding the positives & negatives, of discussion

-          Research or Study on subject / discussion / debate

-          Time Tracking to match Challenge – Debate Period

-          Logical Judgment & putting forth next convincing argument.

-          Going decisive individually or thru voting from Forum

A debate – is not a mere argument.
It gives learning, it forces us to give clear and crisp justification for our beliefs and opinions, if We can't do so, then maybe we should re-evaluate our stance. The immense learning out of it, can be applied in our lives, at various situations.

And of-course, we gain knowledge. Better you debate, the better you communicate, give logics & gets into Win -win situation. Last, but not the least – No doubt, it is fun to debate too !!

In all debates, let truth be thy aim, not victory, or an unjust interest.”   ~ William Penn

Managing You, by Managing Your New Year Resolution.........

Why people make a New Year Resolution…….?

A resolution is a promise to yourself.

As per “Dictionary. Com” a Resolution means – a Decision or Determination. An Action plan to do something by steps or division. It’s a Latin Word derived in 1350 – 1400. However as per Hindi – “Shabdkosh.com”, a Resolution means - विभेदन / विश्लेषण / संकल्प / समाधान / प्रण / विचार etc. etc. (i.e, - Vibhedan - To divide something in steps / Vishleshan - to analyze / Sankalpa – To promise something to God & yourself, with a set action plan / Prana – A decision / Vichaar – A deep thought)

A New Year’s resolution is a promise a person makes for the new year. Irrespective of what resolution or promise you commit to you, the goal is to improve life or other equations in the coming year.

The tradition of New Year’s resolutions comes with Hindu – Sanskrit system where not correct dates of origin of Hindu calendar is available however the corrections happened in 3r Century based on Vedang Jyotish & final reforms by Aryabhatt (in AD 499) & finally Bhaskar II (12th Century). Hindus come with a promise to Harvest new crop with their Calendar start (generally Chaitra Maas Shukla Paksha – Mid of March – April month). It proved a promise year on year & always getting celebrated as a “Festival”, where the basic ingredients are – Faith, Newness, Belief , Set of Actions, Enjoyment & Celebration. Many of diversified Bhartiya states may call it with different names, but the ideation is same – Resolution & Actions. (eg Same Celebration is named different at different Indian states. – Baisakhi, Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, Vishu, Bohag Bishu,  Pohela Boishakh, Bestu Varas, Losong, Navresh, Cheti Chand etc). The roots of Calendar itself were designed as – Vaar (Days), Tithi (Dates), Mas (Month), Ritu (Season), Nakshatra (Lunar Houses), Yoga (Unions of Auspicious time sectors),….etc etc, that even one can plan or promise his marriage or other occasion months back based on the Calendar. Hindus plan for new crop, welcome & pray new Year / Samvatsar, Plan & promise their functions, and Celebrate first day of year as a major Festival. Here Hindus I mentioned mean all living system of that sector & time, eg - Hindus, Sikhs, Boddh, Jains etc.

Again, in Europe, this custom of New Year resolution found long back in 153 B.C. Its said that Month January is named after Janus, a mythological Demi God of early Rome. Janus had two faces — one looking forward, one looking backward. This allowed him to look back on the past and forward toward the future. On December 31, the Romans imagined Janus looking backward into the old year and forward into the new year. This became a symbolic time for Romans to make resolutions for the new year and forgive enemies for troubles in the past. The Romans would give gifts and make new promises, trusting Janus would grasp this and bless them in the year ahead.

And hence the New Year’s resolution was born!
However, sometimes people might over-commit themselves at the beginning of the year, making lots of resolutions or very hard ones, and it’s difficult to keep up with them. That can make it seem like resolutions end in the spring time. Have you ever made a New Years resolution? Resolutions can come in many arrangement & forms. Some people make a promise to change a bad habit, such as quitting drinking / smoking or controlling Anger etc. Whereas other make a self - promise to start a positive habit, such as starting a wellness program, better job assignments or start volunteering for their club / group or community.

Research says approx 40% of people make their resolutions. 55% of people either forget / on & off recall / or fail in their resolution within 2nd day till 6 months. Still there are people those achieved their last year resolution & set the bigger positive plans coming year. Research confirms 35% of youth & approx. 20% of above 50s achieve their planned / set goals or promises. It proves a strong pass rate – Where there is a will there is a way.

There are big bunch of people, those have their resolution made by Dec 31s  or Jan 1st during a new year start, & seeing diminishing the same by Monthend or during the first quarter. Why? Possible reason could be -

-          Because they don’t persuade
-          Its not a written Promise
-          An action plan is not devised to accomplish it
-          There is no review time span set
-          There is no Guider or Encourager
-          No Celebration decided on achieving steps.

So, a resolution generally start planning with lot of Management Gyan or by seeing others – Promise for better parenting, start of wellness program, anger management, Yoga & meditation, changing of job etc. etc…………; but many of plans fall flat & your resolution resembles below statement –

“My goal for 2015 is to accomplish the goals of 2014 which I should have done in 2013 because I made a promise to me in 2012; which was planned in 2011……….”

You know, what a BIG mistake generally everyone do. All make promises or resolution on 31st Dec, as what they promise to start from 1st Jan. Here is the catch……….

We are still leaving every plans on tomorrow & tomorrow never comes………….

Second reason most resolutions fail is because they fail to be crystal clear at start. Confusion is the gateway to complacency -  the more confused, uncertain or unclear you are about something, the less likely you will take action towards achieving it.

“I want to change my job……”, How can one think to change if even CV is not prepared yet. Or if the comfort level is not broken. One need to do his own last year doing’s SWOT analysis before he / she sets a promise or goal. Decide based on your frozen Dreams / Your urgent needs / Present threats & future plans etc.

So, SMILE PLEASE and let us make plan today with an Action backup & review strategy to it.

My resolution for 2014 is –
…to start walking everyday for my good health / Action – Start first walk in the evening & then every morning / Keep record !
…to shift back my home country by coming June / Action – Prepare your CV today & start hunting / meet consultants / Adjust !
…to Loose weight / Action – to set an exercise routine, prepare diet plan, Record Weekly physical findings / Review-Change plan !

What ever is your Promise, let it back up with an “doable” action. Be consistent on your planned daily actions & make a fortnight / weekly check of your progress report. Again, Progress Report should promise & show Progress.

Seems studious – so what. Let it so. Keep in mind – A job well started, is half done.

Managing you, by Thinking beyond the Ordinary.......

Hi folks. Have you heard people like Stephen Hawkins, John Nash, Sudha Chandran or Nick Vujicic.  They are not ordinary people, but they all did extra ordinary things. Things beyond the usual, beyond their subject. They all have some or other disability. It is a great success for any man to perform extraordinary acts – but it becomes even more so when this is done despite a awful disability. They did it only by driving their thought beyond the subject. They deleted the gap between their disability and performing something big. Extra ordinary things require passion, drive & knowledge; and Knowledge on a subject requires little extra drive. One’s  adaptability to knowledge should be beyond our studies or the college. And Should not our learning be actually above, than getting good marks or grades in the college or at our School? Must think beyond!  Think beyond the subject, beyond the ordinary.  Be the part of the subject you are looking at, be the part of the community you are living with, be passionate about the thing you are doing & simply deep dive. I bet, its tough. Coz, crossing the “little” gap between the “subjective knowledge”  and the “Knowledge on Subject” is quite “big”, if not attended to – properly.

Managing your own Sales, by managing your prospects.......

Somehow what the level you are at, if you are into a business – you have to be a Sales man. Its like a MD or CEO of an organization is on the topmost position & control almost all divisions related to business, but he is mainly focusing their brain around the Sales, Marketing & CS. Similarly a Sales Manager could be sitting on a national level position with an eagle eye view to the country doing lot of S&M, service etc jobs but his main domain is to get the business done, I mean on “targets”. They all are the part of the “accountable business cycle”. Rather I say we all are into it, if not into a business of Sales, but may be for selling yourself as a “smart” product. Why so….?  Its just because you are social? Nnaaa…, Its because, Sales is the only way to get & increase your business revenues or to enhance your personal PR.  However in this of my article I am purely focusing on “Product Sales Prospecting” as a Sales guy.

Managing your Kid, if have dream to Become a Doctor…..

Last week, when taking to some of my colleagues I got to understand that they want their kids to become a Doctor. Surprised, I was, as same do I think. Then just because of curiosity I happened to ask this question to couple of my friends in India & other countries. Surprisingly, maximum of them want their kids to become a Doctor. Why so? When I deep dived I found that the major reason could be – One) Respect to this profession in the Society, as after God, Doctor is the second life savior, Second) This is the mass service to our society. Although, many a reason could also be hefty earnings this segment have or bla bla bla…., but majorly it’s a sense of responsibility towards Service our Society. So it is clearly stated that many parents dream that their children will grow up and enter the field of medicine. Becoming a doctor is a process that can be encouraged over many years, and parents can play a vital role in their children making that decision. In this article of mine, I tried to understand the subject & provide several tips that parents can follow when encouraging their children to become doctors. However, all of this comes at a price.

Managing Brand thru Digital Value Chain & Targeting Consumers thru CDJ…….

The digital value chain is becoming a reality. Digital Way (S & M) offers opportunities for Automakers & NSCs along the complete value chain going far beyond traditional marketing. For example, Auto Distributors can and should use digital tools to gain insights into their product / Brand Cycle and revolutionize their retail environments / Concepts. Worldwide, there are “Virtual Showrooms” getting created, which is the future to have Better Customer Intimacy, online. Moreover, digital will play a key role in generating new leads. Clearly, leveraging digital needs to become a reality along the complete value chain, and the vast majority of OEMs / NSCs still has huge opportunities to do even more so. Ultimate goal is to “sell” the product. Even, in the western world - Digital channels dominate the purchasing “journey.” The purchasing journey for cars involves a number of different phases. From awareness to consideration to short listing to purchase to service, and ultimately, repurchase, the Consumer Decision Journey (CDJ) framework describes the way car buyers move from an initial consideration towards their final purchase. This is probably an extension to CI Framework.

Managing Life, Creating Work - Life Balance ......

Our Life is more of a mirror impression of our childhood, our surrounding, our education & our values. Without knowing actually our life becomes a definition to a defined “lifestyle”. And this lifestyle is combination of behavior which in turn the results of our habits. To manage our life better, one need direct action on his lifestyle, ultimately a change is expected in our daily habits & routines. Track back in your brain, how we do at our office or at home. Whether self-employed or employed as a "staffer," you may find yourself – “doing the jobs of many, working overtime as a point of habit, carrying on in an office environment where morale is low, taking business calls even you are at a family meet, killing your family wish some time giving importance to an official meeting on week off day and/or foregoing cost-of-living increases, just to stay employed”.
